Common Home Cooling Myths Debunked

When it comes to cooling your home, there’s no shortage of myths and misconceptions.

This summer is a hot one, and it has many of us looking for ways to keep cool and fight the heat. If your home isn’t properly insulated, that’s the first step to keeping it cooler and more comfortable. Most people think they only need insulation when it’s cold out, but just as it keeps the heat in during the winter, it keeps the cool air in during the summer. In addition to making sure that your home is properly insulated, it’s also important to know the truth about common home cooling myths. Here are a couple of those myths from the expert insulation contractors at Eskimo Insulation:

Myth #1. You should leave your AC on the same level whether you are home or not.

Many people believe that it takes more energy to reheat a home than it does to keep the air conditioner on all of the time, but that simply isn’t the case. This doesn’t mean that you should turn your air conditioner all the way off when you leave, but you should at least turn it up 10 degrees or so.

Myth #2. If you turn your thermostat way down, you’ll cool off your home faster.

Your air conditioner will cool off your home at the same rate, regardless of whether you turn it down to 72 degrees or 60 degrees. Always set your thermostat to your ideal temperature, because if you set it too low, you may forget about it and end up wasting energy.
